We spoke to Spencer to find out more about why he started PurePort, a locally focused window and exterior cleaning business based in Portishead.
Spencer wanted to build a hands-on business that he could launch quickly, while still drawing on his previous business experience. So in March this year, he seized the opportunity to launch PurePort and implemented Squeegee from day one.
A big part of PurePort’s appeal is that it is genuinely local, with its focus firmly at the heart of its hometown, Portishead. This is also where the ‘Port’ in ‘PurePort’ comes from! Rather than trying to cover a huge area, PurePort chose to build a strong local business where customers regularly see the team working around their hometown.
PurePort’s marketing has followed the same local approach.
“Whether through Google, Facebook, local community groups or simply introducing ourselves to people in the streets we are already working in,” Spencer says.
Building a reputation through great service
When asked about their fantastic collection of Google reviews, Spencer told us that they actually came about quite naturally.
The team were relieved to hear how impressed customers were with their work, particularly as they had not come from a traditional window cleaning background. Customers often commented on how thorough the team were compared to cleaners they had used previously, particularly when it came to cleaning the frames and surrounds rather than just the glass.
“When somebody told us they were pleased with the job, we simply asked whether they'd be happy to put that into a Google review. Thankfully, lots of them were.”
Keeping the admin under control
PurePort has used Squeegee from the very beginning. Although they didn't have a background in window cleaning, Spencer already knew from running previous businesses just how much time and energy administration can consume. This was something he wanted to avoid from the start, allowing him to focus instead on growing the business and looking after customers.
“When we looked at the different options available, Squeegee seemed to offer the best combination of simplicity and capability. It made sense for a business just starting out, but also looked capable of supporting us as we grew.”
Although Squeegee was more expensive than some of the alternatives, Spencer says it was an easy decision. In his experience he believes you get what you pay for, and for PurePort, that means having everything together in one place and a single, clear source of information for the business.
“We can follow the whole customer journey, from somebody first becoming a prospect, through quoting and scheduling, to completing the job and taking payment.”
Using data to grow
For PurePort, one of Squeegee’s most useful features is the ability to record how long jobs take and use that information to understand whether they are pricing work correctly.
This helps the team organise their rounds, plan future work and understand how much capacity they have to take on new customers.
Growing locally, not geographically
PurePort is still early in its journey, so the immediate focus is on continuing to grow within its hometown. The aim is to build a strong, dense customer base across Portishead, keeping travel between customers to a minimum while becoming a familiar and trusted local business.
Over time, PurePort plans to add complementary exterior cleaning services, but the main ambition will always remain the same: to become a well-known local business that looks after homes and businesses throughout Portishead.
