The Squeegee Story

Squeegee started life within a small software consultancy run by founder Mark, alongside his brother, a talented apprentice, and a group of developers he had worked with previously.

While the team enjoyed building products for clients, they eventually realised they wanted to create something of their own. They wanted to build a product they could fully invest in, shape and grow over the long term.

The inspiration for Squeegee came from a conversation Mark had with a friend who worked as a window cleaner. After seeing one of the established software solutions available to the industry, he felt the experience was outdated and could be dramatically improved. Drawing on the team's strong background in user experience design and software development, they set out to rethink what service business software could be. From the beginning, the approach was simple and practical.

“We built the first version, got it in front of real users quickly, listened carefully to feedback and iterated from there.”

That early feedback loop became central to how Squeegee evolved. Working closely with users helped shape the direction of the app and build trust within the community during its earliest stages. As Mark reflects, “We’ll always be grateful for the trust they placed in us when the product was still young and rough around the edges.”

However, the shift away from consultancy was not without risk. Revenue dropped and financial pressure meant most of the team had to move on. “For around two years, it was a huge struggle for our families,” Mark says, “And I will always be grateful to Ed, his family and my own wife and family for sticking with it.” That difficult period reinforced our values here at Squeegee.

Early on, we made the decision that Squeegee should be community-led. “We’ve always tried to listen carefully and build something that genuinely improves people’s day-to-day lives and businesses,” Mark explains.

Today, Squeegee continues to evolve as a scalable platform, it is used all over the world and has grown to support businesses outside the window cleaning industry, but the focus remains the same: building with users, not just for them. One of the most rewarding outcomes has been seeing businesses grow beyond what they originally needed from the system, a sign of how powerful the right tools can be when placed in the hands of ambitious teams.
